Dogs are the incredibly beautiful creation of God, and all they have to offer to us is their unconditional love and support. There is no denying the fact that dogs love their human friend unconditionally, but there is one thing more that they love with all their heart, and that is food.

Dogs like to grab an extra bite of food whenever they can, but being a pet parent, you have to be careful of what they get their paws on. This is because some food items might be hazardous for their health.

Well, it is also true that pet parents always fall weak after seeing those eyes filled with love and cute dog grin, and they cannot help but feed their dog with what they are eating. But, it is essential to know that the food you feed your dog out of love might prove to be harmful to their health.

If you too share a bite with your dog of the stuff you eat, then this article is for you. Here, you will get to know about foods that are downright harmful to your little ball of fur.

So, without any further ado, let’s have a look at the list of food items that are dangerous for your dog.

#1. Food Items Containing Xylitol

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in many sugar-free food items like chewing gum, peanut butter, candies, etc. Feeding food items that contain xylitol may result in insulin release, which may further cause seizures, liver failure, or brain damage in your pet.

#2. Avocado

People generally share a treat from the table with their dog. What they don’t realize is that it might not be suitable for their pooch. There are food items that contain a substance called persin, and Avocado is one such food item that contains this substance.

If you have fed Avocado to your dog, stop doing it right away. The seed of the fruit may get stuck in their intestine, which may prove to be fatal for them.

#3. Coffee, Caffeine, and Chocolate

Many dog owners are already aware of the fact that feeding chocolate to their pooch isn’t good for his health, but they still don’t know that coffee and caffeine also falls in the same category.

Coffee, caffeine, and chocolates contain a substance called methylxanthines, which proves to be dangerous for the health of dogs. When dogs consume such food items, it may lead to vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, urination, seizures, and many other health troubles, including death.

#4. Raw or Undercooked Eggs, Meat, or Bones

Raw or undercooked eggs and meat contain a bacteria called E. coli and Salmonella, which may prove to be harmful not only for dogs but also for humans.

Raw bones can also be very dangerous for pets as it may choke them, and if the bone breaks, it may get stuck in their digestive system.

#5. Alcohol

It would be best if you do not give alcohol to your pet under any circumstances because it has the same adverse effect on their liver and brain as it has on human beings.

Even if your dog consumes alcohol in small amounts, it may cause diarrhea, vomiting, nervous system depression, coma, breathing difficulty, and even death. So, make sure you don’t give alcohol to your dog, even for the matter of having fun with him.

#6. Garlic and Onion

It does not matter in what form you feed onion and garlic to your dog (powdered, cooked, raw, or in any other way), these generally cause red blood cell damage or gastrointestinal damage in them.

Although a small amount of these food items is ok, a lot of these may cause poisoning in them.

#7. Nuts

Almonds, walnuts, pecans, and other nuts contain a high amount of oils and fats, which may induce diarrhea, vomiting, pancreatitis, and many other problems in dogs.

Also, keep your dog at a considerable distance from macadamia nuts and the food items containing the same. You have no idea how a few macadamia nuts can make your dog fall sick. These can cause weakness, shake a dog’s muscles, tremors, vomiting, and may even cause death in them.

#9. Grapes & Rasins

Dogs should never be given grapes under any circumstances. Grapes have a high concentration of tartaric acid, a substance highly toxic to dogs that causes pain, kidney failure, and even death. The degree of poisoning depends on how much tartaric acid is in the particular grape, the individual dog, and how much they ate. In some cases, as little as one or two grapes can be fatal. Other foods with tartaric acid to avoid are:
  • Jams/Jellies

  • Tamarinds

Wrapping it Up

Dogs are love, and it certainly is not easy to say no to them for anything, but it is equally important to take care of what they eat.

We hope that the above-stated list of food items your dog should never eat might help you understand what is best for keeping your four-legged pal happy and healthy, and what’s not right for him.
